MINI SURVEY
Have you ever visited Ljubljana's Reuse Centre?
Like a walk through a bourgeoisie apartment where they sell well kept and still very useful items.
At Povšetova 4 in Ljubljana there is a small shop with sewing room and workshop/repair room. Visiting the shop is reminiscent of a stroll through a tastefully furnished bourgeois apartment, except that the carefully selected, well preserved and very useful items carry a ticket with a symbolic price.
gives work to hard-to-employ people while also helping people's surplus items start a new life and delight their new owners for a small outlay. In addition, they also sell things that the skilled hands of craftsmen have changed use – such as a little shoe cupboard which in a previous incarnation was a slot machine.
The things available at the Reuse Centre are brought by local people or redirected from collection centres. We are looking for opportunities to collect larger still-useable items (furniture, white goods) from residents at home in a similar way to the collections of bulk refuse.
A visit to the Reuse Centre is a component part of Ljubljana's educational programme to give schools and kindergartens a relaxed and practical way to approach the subject of waste management. Among other things, young people get to know how important are things like creativity, innovation, social entrepreneurship, creating green jobs and the social inclusion of vulnerable groups.

Reuse is not just taking care to make sure our excess stuff gets a new owner, but also a chance via buying used things to contribute to the conservation of natural resources. A perfect balance between price and quality can be achieved buying second hand, and buying used goods enables cheaper shopping in which we are not involved in the exploitation of labour.

In terms of second hand, the people of Ljubljana most often buy used clothes, children's items, furniture and toys. Those that borrow things from friends or relatives mostly borrow tools and children's and sporting equipment. Every year, Slovenes discard (not give away, replace or sell) huge amounts of still-useful things, which is irresponsible to the environment as well as to those who have made these items, usually for miserly wages.
